Mentoring Project
For the past six years Volunteering Highland has been contracted to provide a mentoring service to individuals on New Deal. New Deal is a government-funded project for the ’18-24’ and ’25 Plus’ group of individuals, supplying high quality training and work experiences that help to secure employment through building confidence, developing skills and generally improving employability.
Volunteering Highland’s mentoring project is funded by Employment Services and is delivered in the following areas:
- Caithness and Sutherland
- Lochaber
- Ross and Cromarty
All our mentors are volunteers. The relationships they have with their clients enable an exploration of difficulties or problems that may be seen as obstacles to a return to work. The mentor, as a volunteer and independent of the Job Centre, can offer helpful advice and support in overcoming these difficulties. For example, a mentor can assist a nervous jobseeker by holding mock interviews that help build his confidence in a similar situation. Mentors can also provide assistance in other areas such as managing finances, increasing self-esteem, setting goals, job searches, signposting, etc.
Mentoring is a service that Volunteering Highland has been contracted to provide to people on New Deal for the past six years and is funded by Employment Services.
Volunteer Mentors are provided with a two day induction course and on-going training covering first aid and drug and alcohol awareness. Support and supervision is offered on a monthly basis and travel expenses are refunded. There is also the opportunity to participate in Mentoring Forums.
The skills developed through becoming a mentor with Volunteering Highland are equally applicable to helping people on Incapacity Benefit who want to volunteer, working with people recovering from addiction problems, and supporting someone during an initial return to work period.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER MENTOR PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH THE APPROPRIATE VOLUNTEER CENTRE.
