The Community Centre is on the main A96 through Nairn and is situated beside the Police Station. To park, turn into Viewfield Drive beside the Police Station. The Community Centre car park is the second turning on the right. Volunteering Highland office is on the 1st floor.

Disclosures … registered intermediary for CRBS (Central Registered Body in Scotland), free registration and disclosures for volunteers, Trusted Partner status

Handyperson Schemea ‘one-off job’ around the house or garden, carried out by volunteers. Referrals are required for work to be undertaken.

Volunteer Managers’ Network Meeting … every six weeks we exchange and share information with other volunteer co-ordinators in the area

Coaching of children in sports. Coaching volunteers are required for all sports at all levels of ability.


3.     Advice/Information Giving

Ref.44-497   Advocate:                    Advocacy Highland

Advocacy Highland is about speaking up for and with people who are not being heard, helping them to express their own views.  You will have the ability to listen and communicate effectively and are available for a few hours each week.  Full training given.

Ref. 44-501    Advisor:                                      Citizens Advise Bureau

The Bureau provides independent, free, confidential and impartial advice and information to the local community.  Some of the volunteers tasks will be to give advice, write letters, complete forms on behalf of clients and clarify complex information where necessary.  Full training given.

Ref.  44-480     Volunteer Listener              Samaritans

Provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair. This support can be provided by telephone, email or face to face.

Provides advice, education and counselling support for individuals and family members with drug and alcohol related problems.

Provide independent, free, confidential advice and information to the local community.


4.      Befriending/Mentoring

Ref. 44-519  Befriender/companion:     St Olaf’s Nursing home.

Become a companion a couple of hours a week to a resident of St. Olaf’s Respite Centre.  If you like to read, play games or go for a walk and are available a couple of hours a week.

Ref. 44-498     Befriender:                                  Befrienders Highland

By befriending, you will be offering friendship on a one to one basis with someone who has experienced mental health problems.  You will receive full training, expenses and support.

Ref. 44-493   Befriender/Companion:        St Olaf The Manor

Become a friend or companion with someone who has learning and physical disabilities, play games, support with activities and take out for walks with wheelchairs.

Ref. 44-554    Volunteer Supporter               Happiness Garden

The Volunteer will work with people who have learning disabilities and co-ordinate plus support the individuals working within the allotment.

Ref. 44-583   Distance Befriender           Distance Befrienders Highland

To provide support on a one to one basis to individuals experiencing mental health problems. Contact is by email, letter and telephone. Ideal for those who would like to volunteer from home.

Ref. 44- 597          Mentor                             Volunteer Highland Nairn Office

Volunteering Highland acts as a link between volunteers and voluntary organisations.  The office is seeking mentors to assist volunteers with disabilities undertake volunteering opportunities. The mentor will help the volunteer start the opportunity and then provide on-going assistance as necessary.

Volunteers will facilitate SMART recovery self help meetings. The Organisation helps recovery of people with addiction problems.

The Organisation provides animals to visit hospices, hospitals and residential homes. If you own a dog or cat and like meeting people then the Organisation needs you.

Ref.  44-710      Host/Driver                         Contact the Elderly

To relieve loneliness amongst isolated elderly people by creating small voluntary groups of drivers and hosts who organise outings for tea one Sunday afternoon a month at a host's home. Volunteers will host the tea in their own home once or twice a year and then act as a driver on other ocassions.

Friendship Groups are meetings where the elderly can reminisce, have a cup of tea and undertake other activities. The Organisers arrange the meetings e.g. locating a suitable room, provide stimulating activities and ensuring refreshments are available.

Volunteers are required to visit housebound elderly individuals and provide company. If you a spare hour or two then offer your services.

5.    Administrative/Office

The Volunteer Centre is looking for office volunteers to answer the phone, take messages, computer input and basic office duties.

Every voluntary group needs a committee to run the organisation.  We are looking for members to join us.

People willing to stand as a Director for the Company, to support adults with learning difficulties. Directors should be committed to the aims and ethos of Health and Happiness and to ensure that its activities are in the interest, and with full involvement of its members.

6.   Youth Work/Adult Education/Disability

The Bonus Club meets once a week on a Monday night and encourages young adults with learning difficulties to try new hobbies, crafts and go on outings.

Girlguiding is split into 4 Groups. All groups need volunteers to assist in the running of the Groups.

Ref. 44-496    Tutor:                        Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education provides support for basic literacy, numeracy and provides help with English as a second language.   Tutoring is on a one to one basis.  Full support and training given.

Ref. 44-503    Classroom Assistant:                                 RSVP

RSVP are looking for people over 50 (under 50's now sought)that would like to assist in the classroom of primary schools.  They will assist the teacher with reading, writing and other subjects for a couple of hours a week.  Good support and expenses paid

Ref. 44-494       Sport Assistant                      Nairn Disability Sport

Will assist disabled persons enjoy a wide range of sports, including Bowling, Swimming etc.

Ref. 44-546     Children's Camp Co-ordinator     The Cleft Lip and Palate Association

Volunteer will research new activity centres within Scotland and then visit each centre to check suitability for children with Cleft Lip and Palate. They will report back to the Association.

Ref. 44-596     Youth Leader                                 Nairn Youth Cafe

Working in the Youth Cafe situated within the Nairn Community Centre. The post will involve assisting the young people to run the Cafe and developing positive relationships.


7.    Practical/DIY

Ref. 44-50   Handyperson Scheme Volunteer: Handyperson Scheme

This Scheme is run by the Volunteer Centre for vulnerable people that require a ‘one off job’, such a gardening or DIY.   Volunteers go out to houses in the community and do anything from painting a room to changing a light bulb or strimming the garden to planting bulbs.

Ref. 44-678     The Happiness Garden             Garden Assistant

The Happiness Garden provides a safe environment for individuals with learning difficulties to learn about gardening. The Assistant will assist in running the garden and helping the individuals achieve their goal.

Ref.  44-705    Railway Carriage Maintenance     Strathspey Railway

A unique opportunity to help restore and maintain historic railway carriages in the Carriage Shed of the Strathspey Railway at Aviemore. This is traditional engineering involving scratch repairs and component manufacture.If you have an interest in Highland history, railways, general engineering or restoration you would be welcome. If you are, or would like to become, a lady 'Engineer' you would be very welcome.

A unique opportunity to help run a preserved railway in the Highlands. This entails meeting and dealing with members of the public on each of the stations and working with train operating staff to ensure the smooth running of advertised services.

Ref. 44-707       Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance     Strathspey Steam Railway

Opportunity to help restore and maintain historic locomotives. Engineering skills that can be used or learnt include,bench fitting, welding/cutting and electrical fault finding.

A unique opportunity to help run a preserved railway in the Highlands.   These posts ensure that the trains run an efficient service for the visiting public. Many people dream of operating a steam train - this is your chance.

Ref. 44-709     Railway Civil Engineering      Strathspey Railway

A unique opportunity to help maintain, renew and extend the track and structures of the Strathspey Railway between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey.This is mainly an outdoor opportunity which uses traditional skills to keep the track and formation in good repair and station buildings, bridges and fencing structurally sound and presentable to the public. Ladies very welcome.

 8.    Play Schemes/Children Clubs

Help enhance the lives of young special needs children by keeping them stimulated and happy.   

      

9.   Charity Shops/Retailing

Ref. 44-516    Shop Assistant:                       Highland Hospice Shop

The shop provides funds for hospices throughout Scotland, thereby ensuring ongoing treatment, research and good facilities for those affect by cancer.  There are several opportunities available from operating the till, serving the customers and taking in stock.  Shifts are for 3 hours each in either the morning or the afternoon.

The museum has many vacancies for volunteers within the organisation, from reception to collators of information, to research and office work.

Ref. 44-522/44-521/44-523/44-525  Group Volunteer/communication Partner/Drivers/Outreach:      Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland                                                                  
This group aims to improve the quality of life for people in Scotland who have been affected by chest, heart and stroke illnesses, through medical research, advice, information and support in the community.  A weekly group meets to enable clients to get together.

Perform constabulary duties and exercise constabulary powers to assist the regular police officers, under the supervision of and supported by the police force.

 Ref. 44-550     Aviation Museum Volunteer      Highland Aviation Museum

The Museum is situated at Inverness Airport. Volunteers help to preserve the aircraft and cockpits, making displays and general maintenance

 Ref. 44-560      Puppy Walker       Guide Dogs for the Blind Association

A puppy walker takes on a puppy at around seven weeks, and matures it for the first year of its teaching in basic commands and socialising it in as many different environments as possible, under the guidance of a puppy walking supervisor.

Ref. 44-561      Fundraising            Guide Dogs for the Blind Association

Fundraising is FUN. Become a member of their local fundraising branchand help at collections and events. Maintain the books, organising Trading Goods and coordinate collections of boxes.  Get involved in lots of different ways either as an individual or part of a branch.

Ref. 44-599        Assistant              Forget-me-not Rescue Centre

Volunteer will assist with cleaning out rabbit pens(indoor/outdoor),re-stocking of pens,moving hutches, answering telephone and dealing with queries if owner not available.

Ref. 44-600        Fundraisers            Marie Curie

Bike the Baltic 2008. Marie Curie is seeking cyclists to undertake this challenge. There are 4 stages and you can select the stage you wish to undertake. There is a requirement to raise sponser funds to a minimum of £3000. The organisation offers a package of benefits.            Have a go and support a great organisation

To assist in ensuring the efficient and smooth operation of the Social Club and involving the service user in the various activities that are arranged. The Social Club is situated in Inverness.

To convey elderly and vulnerable individuals to locations within the local area. Without this facility many people would not be able to enjoy the social/sporting facilities available to them.

Ref. 44-681         Local Hospital Liaision Officer        Art in Healthcare

To be involved with creating opportunities for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy and engage with visual art. The role is to oversee the hanging art in local hospitals and liaising with staff in the hospitals to increase the number of paintings in the hospital.

To be involved with creating opportunities for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy and engage with visual art. Delivering, hanging and collecting paintings from local hospitals.
